Plum Blossom Festival Kicks Off

Perhaps most people know about the popular Cherry Blossom in Japan but not Japanese Plum Blossom. As beautiful as Cherry Blossom, Plum Festival is also one of the key features in Japanese culture. The best time to attend Japanese Plum Blossom Festival is between February to March and Japanese Plum will be the first to blossom during the year. This phenomenon usually represents Purity among Japanese.


Plum Festival can be found almost everywhere in Japan and many events are held to celebrate the plum blossom during these period. One highlight is the ‘Mito Plum Blossom Festival’ at Kairakuen in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture.


Kairakuen with nearly 170 years of history is one of the three largest gardens in Japan along with Kenrokuen in Ishikawa Prefecture and Korakuen in Okayama Prefecture. Kairakuen can be accessed by Train from Ueno station in Tokyo to Mito station, followed by a 20 minutes bus ride from Mito station.
